Strong Ambers and Pales

Cuvée Ermesinde (8%)

This was one of the first non-commercial Belgian beers that we tried, on a recommendation from an American tourist in Delirium Cafe. He had been given the tip by the barman on a previous visit because this beer was from his region of Arlon. At 8%, it is absolutely gorgeous. It somehow has the rich smell and taste of honey, but it is not really sweet (if that makes sense?) We fell in love with it, but haven't found it anywhere except that one pub so far, so we may need to do a road-trip to Arlon sometime to stock up.

Pauwel Kwak (8%)

Kwak rocks for several reasons. One is that you get to drink it out of one of these really cool quarter yard glasses. (The glass is more than an excellent gimmick that causes beer to pour all down the front of unsuspecting tourists in pubs - Like most beers, drinking from the proper glass really does improve the taste of the beer.) The beer itself is excellent - one of my favourite amber ales. I've found that it is usually better on draft than it is from the bottle though, so this is a great beer to drink when you're out on the town. We have a couple of glasses at home though, that somehow made their way into my bag during Gia's visit :-)
